INNER STRENGTH
Great piece in the Wall Street Journal today about CBS's internet strategy, headed up by Quincy Smith. I've had the pleasure of knowing Quincy since his days as Netscape's Investor Relations (IR) head back in the "Web 1.0" days.
Jeff Jarvis hits the nail on the head with this statement, in his post on the article:
"Smartest media quote of the year
“We can’t expect consumers to come to us. It’s arrogant for any media company to assume that.”
Quincy Smith, president of CBS Interactive, said that in today’s Wall Street Journal explaining CBS’ smarter-than-most strategy for a distributed media economy."
I'd nominate another Quincy quote as the second smartest media quote of the year, from the WSJ article, where he's talking about CBS's own attempt at a centralized video website called Inner Tube:
"CBS's new chief Internet strategist now jokes that the Web address for Innertube should be "CBS.com/nobodycomeshere."
Kara Swisher of the WSJ has a separate post on this strategy, that's also worth reading.
It's good to see at least some of the traditional media companies trying some non-traditional avenues to finding success in new media models online.
