LET THEM HAVE TECH
Gizmodo has a report on an upcoming device that offers every car the opportunity to have a Heads-up-Display (HUD) capability for critical information on the windscreen, not just high-end BMWs (see earlier post).
Devicepedia has some additional details:
"GlobalTop Technology, a company manufacturing and designing top-notch GPS systems, is launching a GPS & Bluetooth HUD Speed Meter system that would display valuable informations directly on your windscreen..."
"For navigation display it has Bluetooth connectivity that your smartphone or PDA device..."
"You get the speed and the navigation details directly on your windscreen, just like a jet-pilot..."
"There is no release price yet on this one..."
"...and no release date set for it, but the guys at DigitalReviews will have it for reviews and tests in April."
It's amazing how quickly advanced technology innovations for one's car are getting decoupled from the vertical integration long practiced by the high-auto makers.
It wasn't very long that one could only get a fancy, integrated GPS navigation system for one's car at a cost of thousands of dollars.
Today, a hand-held version from a Garmin or TomTom can be had for the humblest car for a few hundred dollars. And it doesn't have to be just your car, but can be for your bike or your sneakers.
Similar story for integrated cell phone systems, which have now pretty much been made obsolete with the advent of the Bluetooth capability available in almost any cell phone on the market.
Here's to more horizontal decoupling of technology from vertically integrated solutions for one's car.
