OTHER WINNERS
Well, YouTube has won Time Magazine's "Invention of the Year". As Pete Cashmore notes:
"The phenomenon that gave birth to lonelygirl15 and the Diet Coke and Mentos craze beat a nanofabric umbrella, a car that can travel 3,145 miles on a gallon of gas, and a robot that can ride a bike."
I don't know about you, but as much as I like YouTube, and have written about the company's remarkable history, the other inventions sound pretty intriguing.
So I went through the couple of dozen or so inventions listed in the Time article. They're all worth a look.
But click here if you want to go directly to the nanofabric umbrella that doesn't stay wet. Unlike many of the inventions that are prototypes or one of a kind, you can actually buy this umbrella for around $95.
Next on the list is the car that travels delivers over 3,000 mpg. That's pretty cool, but I like the catamaran that runs on solar power a little better.
For some reason, I couldn't find the robot that can ride a bike.
But this bike by BMW and some other folks sounds pretty darn cool:
"A cross between a chopper, a compact and a UFO, the low-emission Clever car runs on compressed natural gas stored in two cylinders behind the passenger's seat and gets a dizzying 108 m.p.g.
The three-wheeled, aluminum-framed Clever turns like a dream thanks to computer-controlled cornering and hydraulics. And even though its engine is good for the earth, this two-seater has plenty of pep; it can cruise at speeds up to 80 m.p.h."
Too bad it's still only a prototype.
So do read up on the YouTube being Time's invention of the year. But if you've had a fair bit of YouTube this year, go directly to the other inventions on Time's list.
