Michael -

i am reading up on a concept right now called 'SPIMES' - a good book called 'shaping things' by bruce sterling is where i started.

Its really the "notion of manufactured objects whose informational support is so overwhelmingly extensive and rich that they are regarded as instantations of an imaterial system. Spimes begin and end as data, they are designed on screens, fabricated by digital means, and precisely tracked through time and space......" to quote the book.

I have heard this notion discussed in academic and venture circles recently -
