TAG, YOU'RE IT!
Well, it's official...Yahoo! is buying tagging pioneer Del.icio.us. Congratulations to Josh and the Del.icio.us team as well as to investors Union Square Ventures (Fred Wilson and Brad Burnham), Marc Andreessen, and Amazon, who reportedly invested $1.3 million in the firm a scant eight months ago.
And congratulations also to the Yahoo! 360 team, who now have a great asset to take tagging more into the mainstream, presumably adding significantly to the service's current 300,000 registered users.
And that's been my main mantra discussing tagging over the past few months, whether it's been on why tagging is still so hard, to what Yahoo! needs to do to improve it's tagging related offerings, to a more light-hearted rant on difficult to remember URLs like Del.icio.us.
It's important to note that Yahoo! can help really scale Del.icio.us, and leverage it's capabilities not just across Yahoo! 360, but also other services like ecommerce, where Yahoo! has been moving ahead with tagging initiatives.
It also looks like Yahoo! will likely follow the Flickr template, running the service as a standalone, but also integrating some of the technologies, and data streams with other Yahoo! services.
And now of course, the guessing game begins in the blog world on who's potentially next? There are so many to choose from for the rest of the GYMAAAE gang. I'm sure Om Malik, Mike Arrington and others will be focused on who'll be tagged next.
