So it's been almost two weeks since the launch of Ning, Marc Andreessen's Web 2.0 venture. In my post at the time, I noted:
"Ning could help usher in a world where data is more sharable, mixable, re-mixable, re-usable etc., of course with all the credit given to the authors in the chain."
It's still early days, but I thought I'd highlight one of my favorite applications to come out of the Top Apps in Ning "Playground" so far.
Generically, it's called ThisorThat, and it enables a user to essentially set up an ongoing popularity contest for a group of items, animals, persons or things.
As I mentioned in the previous post, a good example of this application is Kittenwar, which has since mushroomed into innumerable pet wars on Ning.
The idea has also been extended to geeky things like Tablet PCs, and can be extended to a wide range of items.
But it's a neat idea, and easily adaptable for a wide range of "contests" by Ning users.
I suppose the idea is also applicable to ideas themselves, but I haven't seen it implemented yet (e.g., what religions do you like most, Catholic or Protestant, etc.)
I almost wish there was a "ThisorThat" directory on Ning that lets you find these applications more easily, keep track of them, and share them with friends.
As different sets of applications become popular are cloned by Ning users, Ning will likely need to provide a search and directory infrastructure to help organize applications of a kind so that they can be discovered more easily.
All that is for a later day...in the meantime, it's fun to see more folks coming into the "Playground".
