ONE AND ONLY NO MORE
Well, it took only three months for a new king of the hill. In a post back in March, I'd highlighted the the Audiovox XV 6600 as the "First US Broadband PDA Phone", running on Verizon Wireless's high-speed EV-DO data network.
The new champ, reviewed this past week by Walter Mossberg, is the new Samsung i730. He was lukewarm on it, as was PC Magazine in this review. PC Magazine liked the Audiovox XV 6600 better in an earlier review.
I'm not in any rush to go and replace my Audiovox with the new Samsung, although it does have three things going for it over my current gadget: (1) it has WiFi, (2) it's smaller, and (3) it's black, which I admit is a matter of individual taste.
What's not changed in the three months is Verizon's EV-DO network...it's still the King of the Hill in terms of nation-wide wireless broadband speeds of over 200 kbps.
But that too shall likely change with time, as Cingular, T-Mobile, Sprint et al follow in hot pursuit.
