WHEELS WITHIN WHEELS...
Tech columnist Cringely is always good for a wild, off-the-cuff ideas in his columns, and this piece titled "Going for Broke" on deeper reasons behind the Apple move to Intel chips is a good example.
He raises some good questions, particularly regarding AMD, but I don't buy the punch-line conclusion. Interesting to read though...
I always thought that the idea of porting OS X to Intel and then putting Intel micros in the Apple boxes was to make Apple Operating Systems and Apps available on PCs, thereby offering an alternative to Microsoft's software on a PC platform. I thought one would then be able to buy some really high-end (I think Sony notebooks are a perfect example - offering Apple's OS, potentially marrying sexy hardware to equally beautiful UI).. Anyway, Cringely takes this a step even further and postulates Apple applying their media-savvy and their use of great UI and multimedia capabilities as tools to differentiate Intel's processors.
A tantalizing possibility indeed! If I were Intel, I'd be very very desperate to do something about growth. Their forays into telecom, wireless (WiMax) and consumer electronics (gaming) have not really panned out exactly as they hoped. And as they say, desperate times call for desperate measures.. For Intel, this may be it!
