ON GOOGLE LOGOS AND DA VINCI

THE FACE THAT LAUNCHED A THOUSAND QUIPS...

Some times, even regular creative efforts by people and organizations become a blur after a while, barely registering in the mental revs of getting on with one's daily life.  Google's front page logos are one such effort, always there on special days, but many times not noticed and appreciated as one goes about one's daily quest for things on the net.

Well, today's Google logo (click for larger picture) did make me pause, for two reasons: 

1.  It wasn't in the usual palette of primary colors of red, yellow and blue, and

2.  It was celebrating the birthday of one of my favorite historical figures, Leonardo Da Vinci.

Da Vinci, of course, is the fellow who made a life's work of surprising people on a regular basis with creativity in so many facets of life.  If you don't like today's effort by Google, remember, it could have been worse...they could have celebrated today as Tax Day.

Now, Google has had a history of featuring these special event logos since its earliest days.  They are fun to explore at this part of Google's site chronologically, with many whimsical surprises.  By the way, one of the people behind this at Google is Dennis Hwang, a Korean transplant to the US, who is a computer artist by trade.

As expected with anything to do with Google, a minor industry has sprung up around its logos, with this site being a representative example...there are some pretty creative efforts here as well, although one has to wade through a load of Google ads, of course, to get to them.

In retrospect, it almost seems as if Google took to heart one of Leonardo's sayings:

"Learn diligence before speedy execution."

The company of course releases no product before it's time, i.e., time in beta, which of course has almost become a Google institution in itself.  On that note, it's interesting to note one of the company's first logos in 1999, of course had the infamous word as part of its name.
