ALMOST THERE...
This Gizmodo post explains why we may be FINALLY be getting close to one cell phone charger to rule them all soon. Well, not necessarily all, but most of them...perhaps:
Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, LG, and Nokia have agreed to use micro USB as a charging-plug standard for phones. Your days of buying a bagful of accessories every time you switch phones have come to an end.
Well, not quite. You will still have to toss out all your mini USB chargers, as this decision in truth indicates a rejection of that budding de facto standard. Yep, all the carriers and accessories makers will have one last chance to profit before the standard is in place. [News.com via BoingBoing]
So we'd be going mini-USB chargers to micro-USB chargers, which of course probably makes sense because all the darn phones keep getting smaller and thinner, and smaller and thinner...well, you get the idea.
It's all very well and good of course, until someone comes up with a standard for a nano-USB charging-plug standard.
But until then, you can carry one charger for all of these phones, unless of course you're using an Apple iPhone or a RIMM Blackberry. They don't seem to be part of the list to date.
Which of course makes this whole thing a non-event for me for now, since I happen to use an iPhone and several Blackberry phones.
And while we're on the subject of gadget chargers, no word of course from the makers of notebooks, laptops and other portable gizmos, on whether they'll ever find a way to standardize on THEIR aptly named power bricks.
